Antes y despues de dirigir la Clinica del dolor,para una
clase media
alta,el urologo Dr Orlando Vicente cada dia se ponia
corbata y bata
blanca ,tomaba uno o dos buses,recorria unas cuadras
barrosas que
eran zona de riesgo y ahora son mas,un poco asegurado a
su maletin
de medico,y atendia hasta sesenta pacientes
diarios,pobres,con tarjeta
de asistencia social,en un vecindario de Montevideo,cercano
a La Teja y
al Cerro.No era muy sencillo esperar el colectivo,a veces
en una parada
desolada.
Gente con o sin trabajo estable,simpatica,conversadora,que
casi no
colaboraba ni con monedas en la latita de la
policlinica.Con muchas y
diversas dolencias,muchas nutritivas .Era preferido.Quiza
atraidos por
su acento extrangero,creo que aun no tenia nacionalidad
uruguaya...
Recordaba asi su etapa en el hospital de
Chinandega,ciertas similitudes
habia.
Casi no veia al Padre Telechea,si a las monjas,muy
amables,que le
traian te,y en especial a una,italiana,que lo apoyaba y que
la extraño
mucho cuando se fue para Roma,...no recuerdo su nombre.
Orlando no lo hacia por la institucion,creo,ni por la virgen
del
cobre,sino por fe en el Altisimo,vocacion en la Medicina
social y su
propia situacion historica de inmigrante,casi refugiado
espiritual.

Orlo,las delgadas piernas del David de Miguel Angel,nos
sentamos en el marmol frio de la entrada de la Intendencia
Municipal de Montevideo frente a la explanada.
Pasan jovenes vestidos a la usanza hippie y reggae ,al
estilo de la familia Sicur.

After a long and tiring journey of 8 hours from
#Uruguay to Havana I get tired of the capital. Spent the
night there for one night and in the morning take a bus for
tourists to Guantanamo. I'm tired. The heavy rain will not
let me see through the window the dream landscape. 18
who forbade me to travel to the island, I've finally
succeeded ago.
In Guantanamo they expect familiar. Kisses and tears
and the old house that seems more girl when leaving. My
mother lists me the dead of the family, the neighborhood
and who have migrated to Miami or Havana. No one left of

De vuelta a Guantanamo
Despues de un largo y agotador viaje de 8 horas
desde #Uruguay a la Habana llego cansado a la capital.
Alli pernocto por una noche y en la madrugada tomo un
omnibus para turistas hacia Guantanamo. Estoy cansado.
La lluvia copiosa no me deja ver a travez de la ventanilla
el paisaje soñado. Hace 18 años que se me prohibia viajar
a la isla, por fin lo he logrado.
En Guantanamo me esperan los familiares. Besos y
lagrimas y la antigua casa que me parece mas chica de
cuando la deje. Mi madre me enumera los muertos de la
familia, del barrio y de quienes han emigrado a Miami o
a la Habana. No queda nadie de los antiguos conocidos,
solo Fara la presidenta del comite de cuadra y Sergio el
cincuenton mecanico que vive colindante a nuestra casa.
Ya no puedo decir "mi casa" Es de los que se quedaron.
Por las tardes los jovenes se agolpan en los
corredores sin tener nada que hacer, solo observar a los
que pasan y mirar que marca de zapatos usan. Es una
generacion perdida que solo piensa en emmigrar a Miami y
en la ropa moderna. No conozco a nadie. Deambulo por la
calle como un hombre sin patria. Ya no pertenezco a aquel
lugar. El exilio me ha atrapado en sus costumbres y me
siento ajeno a estas viejas circunstancias.
Quien dice que le violencia no ha calado en la
indiosincracia cubana. Una mañana me entero que han
matado a el viejo Sergio, el mecanico, de una puñalada
traicionera. La policia investiga y el barrio esta conmovido.
Fara, la del Comite, esta metida en todo,
colabora con las investigaciones. Quien mejor que ella para
aportar algun indicio que aclare el crimen. Yo sigo
caminando por las calles donde transcurrio mi niñez y
adolescencia. Todo me es ageno y no siento el
estremecimiento que sentia en mis sueños alla en el exilio
cuando soñaba con Guantanamo. Ya no es mio. Es otra
ciudad y otro mundo. Era como si todos hubieran muerto,
como Sergio, y solo quedara una partida de jovenes
desconocidos que lo ocupan todo.
Vuelvo a Uruguay con el corazon vacio. Despues
de 18 años no queda nada de mi antiguo barrio en
Guantanamo, solo algunas antiguas casas casi derruidas
por el tiempo. Uruguay es mi casa. He aqui donde
pertenezco.

Retour à Guantanamo
Après un long et fatigant voyage de 8 heures de
#Uruguay à La Havane, je suis fatigué de la capitale. Nous
avons passé la nuit là-bas pour une nuit et le matin,
prendre un bus pour les touristes à Guantanamo. Je suis
fatigué. La forte pluie ne me laisse pas voir à travers la
fenêtre le paysage de rêve. 18 qui m'a interdit de se
rendre à l'île, je l'ai enfin il y a réussi.
A Guantanamo, ils attendent familier. Bisous et les
larmes et la vieille maison qui semble plus jeune fille au
moment de quitter. Ma mère me énumère les morts de la
famille, le quartier et qui ont migré vers Miami ou La
Havane. Personne ne reste de l'ancien connu seulement
Fara président du comité du bloc mécanique et Sergio
cincuenton qui vit à côté de notre maison. Je ne peux pas
dire «ma maison» est de ceux qui sont restés.
Le soir foule de jeunes dans les couloirs avec
rien à faire, il suffit de regarder ceux qui passent et
regardez ce qui était la marque de chaussures. Il est une
génération perdue qui ne pense qu'à emmigrar à Miami et
dans des vêtements modernes. Je ne connais personne. Je
me promène dans la rue comme un homme sans pays. Je
n'appartiens à cet endroit. Exile m'a pris dans leurs
habitudes et je me sens étranger à ces vieilles
circonstances.
Qui a dit que la violence n'a pas imprégné le
indiosincracia cubain. Un matin, je trouve qu'ils ont tué le
vieux Sergio, le mécanicien, un coup de poignard dans le
dos. La police enquête et le quartier est secoué.
Fara, le comité est coincé autour, collabore avec
les enquêtes. Qui mieux que lui pour fournir une indication
de clarifier le crime. Je marche dans les rues où j'ai passé
mon enfance et de l'adolescence. Tout est Ageno moi et
pas sentir le frisson je me sentais dans mes rêves il en
exil quand il rêvait de Guantanamo. Il est plus à moi. Il est
une autre ville et un autre monde. Ce fut comme si tout le
monde était mort, comme Sergio, et seulement resté un
parti de jeunes étrangers qui occupent tout.
Uruguay à nouveau avec un cœur vide. Après 18
ans il ne reste rien de mon ancien quartier à Guantanamo,
seulement quelques vieilles maisons presque ruinées par le
temps. L'Uruguay est ma maison. Voici où je fais partie.

Un Guantanamero en Punta del Este
El verano se ha ido en el Hemisferio Austral. Estamos
en el Otoño Uruguayo pero parece que es el Invierno que
se adelantó. Fueron cinco días de lluvia constante. Las
sabanas húmedas y la ropa que no se seca en la
tendedera. Las calles vacías. Los restaurantes vacíos. Ya
se había ido la ola de turistas argentinos y brasileños que
venían a veranear en los hoteles o en sus imponentes
mansiones de techo a dos aguas. Luego de estar Punta
del Este libre de esa plaga veraniega es un verdadero
placer caminar por sus ramblas de mar.
Hay dos playas a cada lado de la península: la de la
Mansa, con sus quietas aguas y la de la Brava con su mar
embravecido. La de la Mansa es para la gente mayor, es
más apacible. En la de la Brava aún quedan surfistas
rezagados que desafían las gélidas aguas con sus trajes
impermeables. Yo prefiero el fulgor de las rompientes olas
al atardecer, me hacen sentir más joven.
Guarecido de la interperie con un grueso abrigo,
bufanda y guantes me paseo por la Brava cerca de los
imponentes edificios. El que están construyendo es el de
Donald Trump, un rascacielos redondeado y llamativo como
todo lo que él hace.
¿Quién iba a decir que un Guantanamero se iba a
sentir como un Puntaesteño más? Es lo que siento
después de tantos años. Mi querida Patria chica es solo un
añorado recuerdo que se sume en las brumas al igual que
este anochecer, y los yates de lujo del puerto, con las
luces apagadas, esperan zarpar al norte, donde todavía es
verano.
Mientras tanto yo camino solo por la rambla. Mi hija
me esperara al final del día. Mi hermano fue a
Guantánamo. Estará disfrutando de las cálidas aguas de
las playas de Cuba y de un sabroso lechón asado. Yo sigo
caminando y respirando el aire salitroso. La puesta de sol
es imponente.

del coma,me conmueve intimamente.Es que el tema de
Volver,al pasado geografico,es siempre un imposible.No

After a long and tiring journey of 8 hours from
#Uruguay to
Havana arrived tired to the capital. I spent the night there

De vuelta a Guantanamo
Despues de un largo y agotador viaje de 8 horas
desde #Uruguay a la Habana llego cansado a la capital.
Alli pernocto por una noche y en la madrugada tomo un
omnibus para turistas hacia Guantanamo. Estoy cansado.
La lluvia copiosa no me deja ver a traves de la ventanilla
el paisaje soñado. Hace 18 años que se me prohibia viajar
a la isla, por fin lo he logrado.
En Guantanamo me esperan los familiares. Besos y
lagrimas y la antigua casa que me parece mas chica de
cuando la deje. Mi madre me enumera los muertos de la
familia, del barrio y de quienes han emigrado a Miami o
a la Habana. No queda nadie de los antiguos conocidos,
solo Fara la presidenta del comite de cuadra y Sergio el
cincuenton mecanico que vive colindante a nuestra casa.
Ya no puedo decir "mi casa" Es de los que se quedaron.
Por las tardes los jovenes se agolpan en los
corredores sin tener nada que hacer, solo observar a los
que pasan y mirar que marca de zapatos usan. Es una
generacion perdida que solo piensa en emmigrar a Miami y
en la ropa moderna. No conozco a nadie. Deambulo por la
calle como un hombre sin patria. Ya no pertenezco a aquel
lugar. El exilio me ha atrapado en sus costumbres y me
siento ajeno a estas viejas circunstancias.
Quien dice que le violencia no ha calado en la
indiosincracia cubana. Una mañana me entero que han
matado a el viejo Sergio, el mecanico, de una puñalada
traicionera. La policia investiga y el barrio esta conmovido.
Fara, la del Comite, esta metida en todo,
colabora con las investigaciones. Quien mejor que ella para
aportar algun indicio que aclare el crimen. Yo sigo
caminando por las calles donde transcurrio mi niñez y
adolescencia. Todo me es ageno y no siento el
estremecimiento que sentia en mis sueños alla en el exilio
cuando soñaba con Guantanamo. Ya no es mio. Es otra
ciudad y otro mundo. Era como si todos hubieran muerto,
como Sergio, y solo quedara una partida de jovenes
desconocidos que lo ocupan todo.
Vuelvo a Uruguay con el corazon vacio. Despues
de 18 años no queda nada de mi antiguo barrio en
Guantanamo, solo algunas antiguas casas casi derruidas
por el tiempo. Uruguay es mi casa. He aqui donde
pertenezco.

Fragment of the novel "Palms and Ombues"
ARCO ORLO.
The bus was quickly down the highway linking
Montevideo to Tacuarembó department. We were in the
summer and the heat and the smell of sweat were
sweltering. Passengers dozed or bored watching the
landscape that passed on both sides of the road. I also
watched the picture to my left, lined by green pastures and
wool sheeps and cows. Occasionally the monotony was
broken by a yellowish ceibo under which the cows took
shelter from the burning sun.
Iñaqui Echevarria slept beside me with loud snoring.
We agreed not to sleep during the trip so that your snoring
cursed not disturb the other passengers. But No. With his

Villa Ancina, a town about 50 kilometers from Tacuarembó

When I came back to Uruguay after a eventful holiday in
Cuba, I met at the airport with a drama that was their
sociopolitical overtones and human.
I approached the front row to hear the dialogue. A woman
of about forty, still beautiful and well dressed, was in the
area to check in with hundreds of passengers and had
formed a chorus around her. She was of low lengnt, stylish
hairstyle and makeup complexion well but had a stunning
voice almost shotting_ officials dressed in blue guarding the
air terminal.
Mrs. started with a conciliatory tone and all listened to,
most of the passengers were Cubans expecting different
flights especially Spain and Uruguay.The issue was that the
husband had got ill of waiting the flight and his blood
pressure had risen to dangerous levels and airport
authorities taken him to an area where the wife could not
access.
___ I have to see my husband. See him with my own
eyes.
__ Mrs. It is not allowed to enter the room where it is. It's
restricted area. Do you have the blood pressure medication,
if so not easy for a moment?
__ Well I do not I'll give medicine until I see my husband.
__ But understand. You can not pass
.__ How I can not go? Is this a military fortress ?. Do me
the check in the passport and bags and let me go if you
do not want to be arme a scandal in front of everyone.

we with our silence we were victims still living far away,
with our silence, of the atrocities of Castrism.

As in the old Alain Resnair movie can no longer say
Guantanamo mon amour and less living a romance under

days.
The worst thing is to have a picture of the past without
seeing that everything changes but change for the worse.
The city has become a jumble of small plate houses of two
floors. All the same. The landscape does not change
throughout giving sight. No, I can not say "mom amour
Hiroshima" has not yet been bombed but people walk
through the streets as if it were.

-URUGUAY A BRAVE URUGUAYAIN IN CUBA
When I came back to Uruguay after a eventful holiday in
Cuba, I met at the airport with a drama that was their
sociopolitical overtones and human.
I approached the front row to hear the dialogue. A woman
of about forty, still beautiful and well dressed, was in the
area to check in with hundreds of passengers and had
formed a chorus around her. She was of low lengnt, stylish
hairstyle and makeup complexion well but had a stunning
voice almost shotting_ officials dressed in blue guarding the
air terminal.
Mrs. started with a conciliatory tone and all listened to,
most of the passengers were Cubans expecting different
flights especially Spain and Uruguay.The issue was that the
husband had got ill of waiting the flight and his blood
pressure had risen to dangerous levels and airport
authorities taken him to an area where the wife could not
access.
___ I have to see my husband. See him with my own
eyes.
__ Mrs. It is not allowed to enter the room where it is. It's
restricted area. Do you have the blood pressure medication,
if so not easy for a moment?
__ Well I do not I'll give medicine until I see my husband.
__ But understand. You can not pass
.__ How I can not go? Is this a military fortress ?. Do me
the check in the passport and bags and let me go if you

GUANTANAMO MOM AMOUR
As in the old Alain Resnair movie can no longer say
Guantanamo mon amour and less living a romance under
the rubble of a war. If it looks like a city after a bombing,
only the center of Marti Park remosado as an image in
Technicolor for tourists who spend long in their micro
refrigerated is pleasing to the eye. For my house passes a
